The Calandtroep

The Calandtroep was founded in 1913, as a result of a group of boy playing "the Scouting game" (See "the history of the group"). We are one of the oldest groups in Rotterdam and we are proud to say that we are the only group that is still carrying the same name and the same colour neck kerchief and has been in action ever since the founding. (Even in the last war, when Scouting was prohibited by the Germans, the group went "underground" and continued his activities)

At the moment the group is located in the old parts of Rotterdam where there is not much wealth and a lot of poverness. A very high percentage of our boys come from one parent families and quit a few of our member have roots in other countries. Neither of these facts may ever be in the way for a boy that wants to join Scouting. That is why are contributions and camp prices are very low indeed.

In spite of that our group has an enormous amount of materials and equipment. Most of this is not bought but we got it because is was defect or no longer useful. With a lot of hard work our technicians managed to repair things and we could use it again. I do not know how many thousands of hours they put in this kind of work but it is unbelievable.

The most significant fact of our group is the way the boys and the leaders treat each other. It is very seldom that there is an argument and everyone is trying to accept the other for what he is  and tries to makes friends with him. I know that this is normal in Scouting but I have seen a lot of different interpretations of it.

We (leaders and boys) are proud on our group, and of course we know we are possible not the best group in the Netherlands, but we do not know a better group yet.
